the light of god's word
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” [Psalm 119 v105]
- Look back over this last year. Hopefully, you’ll have been involved in some amazing social action projects, taking the message of hope to many through various and creative ways.
- But, be honest now, how’s your Bible reading been going this year? Have you kept the promises you made yourself at the start of Hope08, or over the summer at the many festival or church camps you attended? Does your New Year's resolution to read your Bible seem a distant memory?
- Don’t worry, this is not some holiness test. The simple fact of the matter is that when we’re involved in amazing activities for God, sometimes we can forget to keep up with the Bible reading too, forgetting that actually, time spent in private with God is the fuel and refreshment we need to get back out there serving people again...effectively!
- Yet it’s more than this! You see the Bible, God’s word, really is our guide. It’s one of the main ways in which we keep on the straight and narrow and learn what’s right and what’s definitely wrong by God’s standards. Yeah, some people might twist things and change words and say it’s fine to do this and that, but God has already spoken. It’s there in black and white, in text, inspired by the Holy Spirit and written by several authors over several centuries.
- The Psalmist knew this, just like he knew the times he was living in. Do you know this? Do you realise what a powerful tool you have in the Bible? Get into the word of God this week, and really challenge yourself to make Bible reading as important as your time doing mission. Together they make for an awesome combination of God’s power!
