what can i give him?

'What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.'
[In The Bleak Midwinter. Words by Christina Rossetti, 1872]

  • Do you have a favourite Christmas Carol? Maybe it's the awesome tune to 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' that moves you, or possibly you enjoy a good old sing-a-long to the tune of 'Jingle Bells'?

  • Whatever moves you on the musical side of Christmas, we must remember that above all, it's the lyrical content that's most important. Great tunes they may be, but give me 'Hark The Herald Angels Sing' over 'Jingle Bells' any day! Why? Because of the amazing truths we sing back to God about Jesus squeezing himself into the form of a tiny baby in order to fulfill the mission of the Holy Trinity; to save humankind from sin.

  • This week's challenge - as we head towards the end of our amazing year of Hope08 - is very simple and yet so deeply challenging on a day-by-day basis, let alone a yearly Christmas event. The challenge is to reflect on the final verse - quoted above - of those awesome words by Christina Rossetti; and make the choice to give God our hearts.

  • You see, whatever you do in life, the very best thing you could ever give God is your heart; your life, your dreams, your money, your attitudes, your skills, your gifts, your past, present and future. God wants it all because He wants the best for you. And when we give Him our heart, He can really use us to change our families, friends, communities, and world.

  • So what can you bring to the nativity scene this year? What can you bring to the child who grew up to die for you? Give Him your heart - all of it, on a daily basis, no matter how tough life gets. Then watch and see how faithful God is and how much He will use you to bring about His kingdom on earth.
