the conversation starter

When I speak to people about telling their friends about their faith one of the most common problems they say they have is starting the conversation. How do you bring up the topic of what you believe with your friends without coming across as a bit of a nutter?

The best way, in my experience, is to create opportunities for them to ask questions. For example:

  • When your friends ask you what you did over the weekend don’t be afraid to say that you went to church. You don’t have to make a big thing about it, just mention it as you would about going to football etc.

  • Myspace Status. Social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook and Bebo have given us an easy way of telling our friends things without actually speaking with them. Make sure you say that you’re a Christian in the ‘Religious Views’ section so your friends are aware you have a faith.

  • Find some good Christian music. There are some amazing bands out there right now who have great tunes with a Christian message. Add some to your mp3 player. If your friends ask what you are listening to play them a bit then explain why you like it.

  • Invite a friend to an event. This could be a youth club, a concert or even a youth service. Let them see first hand why you enjoy the family of God so much.

The best advice is to be proud of what you believe. If others think you are embarrassed by your relationship with God they are more likely to make fun of it. If you live out what you believe people should be able to see a difference in you and want to know more!

go for it everyone (:
i started speaking up about my faith just a few months ago and since then I've seen more than 20 friends and friends of friends becoming christians. find out about an alpha course and get a group of friends to go along- i've found its an awesome starting point.
And most importantly, pray pray pray about it and about them and ask God for the words and oppurtunities to help you.

it takes courage but, you can do it!
