Got Talent?
I honestly cannot remember a time when people weren’t saying ‘Have you seen the video of that lady from Britain’s Got Talent?’- after watching it for the first time last week I now want a t-shirt saying ‘Yes, I’ve watched it’ just to stop people from asking.
The fact that it’s received more views on YouTube than Obama’s inauguration speech shows that it’s something special. Only a few seconds into the song and millions of people watching all over the world are suddenly aware of how great a singer she really is, despite what we may have thought during the standard pre-performance interview.
Whenever I read the story of Jesus calming the storm [Matthew 8:23-27], I always feel a bit superior to the disciples. In my mind I’m thinking ‘Come on guys, why are you doubting Jesus?! There’s no need to be afraid of a few waves and a breeze when God’s son is on board!’ But actually, if I was on that boat, I would have been scared. Why? Not because I don’t trust Jesus, but because I tend to take a lot of things by face value. I’d have looked at the crashing waves, felt the roaring wind, and cried for help.
When Jesus calms the storm, the bible says the disciples were amazed, because he had revealed more of his true self and power to those around him. They also asked, ‘Who is this man?’ because they had seen a side of Jesus that they had never seen before.
As Susan Boyle started to sing that song, people were definitely stunned. She revealed more of who she truly was, which left many people like me, who take things by face value, in shock. This made me think- have my friends seen the real side of me?
I wonder if they have taken me by face value and got it completely wrong. Sometimes I try and ‘be more Christian’ to those around me in the hope that they might see Jesus in me and ask some questions about faith. But this week, instead of doing something on the outside, I’m trying to reveal more of who I really am on the inside, so that people will see Jesus in me, and ask the question of ‘who is this man?’, allowing some amazing opportunities to talk about my faith.
