Try for Everything?

Ill-gotten treasures are of no value,
but righteousness delivers from death.
The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
Lazy hands make a man poor,
but diligent hands bring wealth.
He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Proverbs 10: 2-5

We shouldn’t expect everything to be handed to us on a plate, some things we need to work for. At the time these verses were written hard graft was the only way to have any sort of income. If you didn’t put in an honest days work, either working the land or looking after livestock, you just wouldn’t be able to earn any money at all. This means that if you were lazy you just wouldn’t eat. That’s quite a strong motivator yet there were obviously people who still just couldn’t be bothered. Sadly, these days it is much easier to be lazy and not work. You can usually find someone else to bail you out when you need it, but that isn’t what God wants. He wants us to give our all in everything we do, which includes our work. The verse says that God won’t let the righteous go hungry. So if you try your best and work hard you will be rewarded.

Challenge

Think about your work life, which includes your school work, are you giving it all you can? This doesn’t mean making it take over your life, but ask yourself if there are areas in which you can try harder?
